    Literary theory can be daunting. But all writing, even theoretical fiction, even abstruse scholarship, is music and story. I’ll help you identify the sources you need to support the most important parts of your essay: your argument and your voice.

  • Grammar and Style
    In the classroom, I ask my students to learn grammar just as a piano teacher might require pupils to learn sight reading. Grammar is an important key to understanding style. I’ll make grammar accessible to you so you can understand howto write clearly, in an engaging style.

  • Speech Preparation
    Orators recognize that a speech is part music, part drama, part chess game. I’ll help you develop a focused thinking strategy to develop your ideas, organize them coherently and present them eloquently.

    I’ll teach you how to recognize these and other rhetorical errors and devices on sight, and how to play on them in a speech.

  • Reading Comprehension Exams
    I’ll teach you to read actively, identifying the main point, key ideas and supporting information quickly. You’ll learn the strategies for eliminating wrong answers on a multiple-choice exam fast.

  • Timed Writing Exams
    Such exams are principally exercises in writing to a prompt. I’ll teach you to identify the prompt and address the question, budgeting your time efficiently. You’ll learn to write a thesis statement that is immediately clear to the reader, and then to develop that thesis lucidly and completely.

  • School Admission Essays
    I’ve helped clients write successful personal statements for Harvard, Loyola Law School, UCLA and Berkeley. With my assistance, you can highlight your strengths in your own words, with a clear focus on how those strengths make you an asset to the school of your choice.
    You’ll find strategies to discuss events that you might consider liabilities – such as lapses in your education or learning disabilities – as sources of academic strength and personal character.

  • ESL
    As an experienced English as a Second Language instructor, I’ll help you improve your conversational English, grammar, business English or preparation for exams in one-on-one sessions tailored to your needs.
